A NEW MANUSCRIPT

A Use for Good Men

In 2003, Sam Artell was a Navy chaplain with the Marines in Iraq, the man they found when they needed someone to hear what they could tell no one else. Nineteen years later, his software helps veterans find work, reading their service records for everything a résumé leaves out.

A defense contractor offers twelve million dollars for a license, enough to hire counselors for veterans still waiting for help. Then a Marine Sam once counseled takes a transport assignment through the deal. Only after the shipment leaves does he learn that the ammunition he helped send is supplying a government-backed force shelling coastal towns.

The executive behind the shipment, Martin Dambrosky, was waiting at the end of the worst road of Sam’s war. Now he wants Sam’s model to find more people for work they may not understand until they have done it.

Sam wants the deal stopped. When the company begins photographing his wife and daughter, his determination to protect them begins costing him their trust. He breaks promises to colleagues. He loses his job. And his own voice keeps count of everyone he has failed.

The model is due to ship Friday. Two employees who complained, held in the company’s overseas compound, face being handed to the men they accused that same day. To stop either handover, Sam needs the colleagues whose trust he has broken.

His efforts to build a good life after the war have produced something valuable. Now someone has found a way to use that value against the people he hoped to help.
